Emotional outbursts in negative situations are rampant amongst ADHD patients, and instances are not rare when they throw things in stressful situations.

People with ADHD can’t control their volatile emotions. As such, they feel helpless and frustrated. Those explosive emotions are like scary monsters that emerge out of nowhere and take complete control over them. Individuals with ADHD symptoms feel powerless, and they don’t know what to do. Hence, they get more agitated, impatient, depressed, and stressed.

Fact 2: Individuals with ADHD symptoms get overwhelmed with a single emotion

People with ADHD can’t tolerate any rejection or criticism, and they see it as a failure, which they can’t accept. Their greatest fear is to be perceived as a failure by others. In medical terms, it is called rejection-sensitive dysphoria (RSD). This symptom is quite prevalent in people with ADHD.

Individuals with ADHD are so overwhelmed with the single emotion of rejection that they forget to analyze the other aspects of a situation. This can lead to miscommunication and emotional hurt.

Suppose an individual with ADHD shows an assignment to a coworker. If he observes a tiny bit of uncertainty in the coworker’s response, he may interpret it as rejection or criticism. This can trigger an inappropriate outburst of emotion in self-defense even before trying to understand what the coworker wants to say.

Fact 3: They can’t differentiate between trivial and grave matters

The problem is with the nervous system. The nerves that carry emotional intelligence to the brain are compressed and congested. As such, the emotional part of the brain doesn’t work correctly.

People with ADHD can’t discriminate between trivial and grave matters. Hence, they face challenges in dealing with stressful situations rationally. They might overreact over a problem that is stressful but not potentially dangerous. They lack emotional intelligence.

Fact 4: Individuals with ADHD may suffer from dysthymia

The consequences of undiagnosed or untreated ADHD can be disastrous. Individuals can suffer from dysthymia, which is nothing but mild depression. It is a long-term depression where people suffer from sadness and low self-esteem. The years of dealing with negative feedback, stress, frustrations, setbacks, etc., lead to this type of depression.

When emotional pain is internalized, an ADHD patient suffers from low self-confidence and depression for a short period. However, when the pain is externalized, the individual may vent their anger at the circumstance or person who hurt him. Fortunately, the offense doesn’t stay for an extended period. Another good point is that people with ADHD tend to express anger verbally, and there is no physical abuse.

ADHD patients can’t manage emotional pain like others. This is why they strive to avoid painful situations. They seek approval from their friends and relatives. As such, they do everything they can to please friends and family. They would often ask friends what they wanted so that they could act accordingly. The main motive is to avoid any situation that is stressful or painful as they can’t handle it.

It is not wrong to please others. However, over time, individuals with ADHD forget what they want from life as they are busy pleasing others.

Fact 6: Individuals with ADHD get overwhelmed with momentary emotion 

Memory is an integral part of the brain. It helps to monitor and control emotions. However, as the brain network of people with ADHD becomes clogged, they suffer from memory impairments. They are not able to check their explosive emotions.

Sometimes, a momentary emotion becomes too intense, and it spreads into the entire space of the brain. And, when something of this sort happens, the person with ADHD cannot reason, and reasons and logic stop working.

A common example:

A parent refuses to order a pizza for the child. If the momentary emotion intensifies, the child may get enraged and behave aggressively. Fleeting feeling controls everything, and it overshadows all other emotions.

Fact 7: They are more concerned about instant gratification than delayed rewards

People with ADHD are interested in activities that give instant gratification and can’t focus on activities that generate long-term benefits or delayed rewards. People with ADHD don’t want to endure the pain of failure. Hence, they are not ready to get involved in anything that doesn’t guarantee instant success. They don’t want to take any chances or emotional risks.

How people with ADHD can manage intense emotions

A friendly doctor, proper therapy, medication, and a few natural remedies can help to control intense emotions to a great extent. However, there are a few other ways to manage intense emotions too.

For instance, people with ADHD should exercise every day as it helps to improve mood and control emotions. Next, they should sleep for 7 to 8 hours every day. Third, they should take one task at a time. This is because individuals with ADHD are not good at handling pressure. Fourth, they should do what makes them happy during their free time. It helps to refresh their minds. Fifth, a person with ADHD should take a break and walk away if they can’t handle a stressful situation. The much-needed break can help him to reorganize their thoughts and behave rationally.
